At Pooginook, success is built on strong values, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous progression. Every member of our team — from breeding to operations — plays a role in delivering better genetics, better knowledge, and better outcomes for producers. We believe real progress comes from combining practical experience with education and innovation, and we invest in both our people and our programs to stay ahead of industry challenges. It’s this shared commitment that gives producers the confidence to back Pooginook genetics, year after year.

P/GK Progression
2024 · 76 pages · PDF
We asked people we rate across the industry — researchers, consultants, wool brokers and a processor — to share their thoughts on where Merino production is heading. Their perspectives sit alongside our own breeding direction, giving a broader view of where the industry is going and what it could mean for Merino producers. We put it together to be worth reading whether you ever buy a ram from us or not.
Highlights
Pooginook's five-year breeding direction, and how the program got here
Genetics for lamb survival and improved foot health
Six-month shearing, weaner nutrition and benchmarking Merino production
Sixteen contributions from across the industry
03. Ram Selection Resources
Learning to pick rams on both phenotype and ASBVs takes time, but it can fundamentally change the way you select your next sire team. The indexes, percentile bands and understanding which traits actually move the needle in your operation can take some getting used to.
The following resources we use and make available to everyone, to help make the data easier to understand and more importantly put it into context for your own flock. We’ve put them here so you can take your time working through them well before sale day. The more familiar you are with the figures, the easier it becomes to combine the data with what you see in the paddock and make confident ram selections.
Ram Buyers Guide
neXtgen Agri · 76 pages · PDF
“There are about 30 years that the average sheep farmer is controlling the genetic decisions of a sheep flock. Thirty is not many decisions to make, so it is very important that you make good ones.”
Based on this statement, this guide was built to make those decisions informed — explaining the fundamentals of ASBVs and walking through any trait you will find in a sale catalogue and how it relates to your flock.
Highlights
How breeding values are calculated, and what accuracy, indexes and percentile tables really tell you
Eighteen traits explained, wool, growth, carcass, reproduction and health
Building a breeding plan and matching genetics to your system
Structure and functionality: what to look for standing in the pen
Trait sheets
